How Often Do I Need My Eyes Checked?

The American Optometric Association recommends the following guidelines for people with no signs of eye or vision problems:

6 - 24 MONTHS First exam at 6 months*
2 - 5 YEARS At age 3, and again before starting 5k
6 - 18 YEARS Once a year
19 - 60 YEARS Every 1-2 years or as recommended by doctor
60+ YEARS Once a year

  • Your last eye exam was over 2 years ago
  • You use computers, phones, or other digital screens for extended periods of time
  • You occasionally experience headaches that blur your vision
  • You experience an increase in ‘floaters,’ spots or bright flashes
  • You experience chronic pain, redness, dryness, itching, discharge, or irritated skin around the eyes
  • You’ve received an injury to the eye or eye area

Are walk-ins accepted at the Mt. Pleasant location?

Walk-in patients are only accepted if there is availability around scheduled appointments. Please schedule an appointment online to ensure you see an eye doctor the same day you come into the store.

How often does a child need their eyes dilated?

It is recommended by the American Optometric Association that dilating a patient’s eyes happens every year as part of their kid’s comprehensive eye exam. Dilating drops are safe and effective for kids of all ages.

What symptoms would I see if my child needs glasses?

If your child has had watery eyes, frequent headaches or has been squinting, they may need glasses or their prescription updated. Let your pediatric eye doctor know if you’ve been noticing any of these symptoms when you take your child to their appointment.

Does Wisconsin Vision’s Mt. Pleasant location offer Telehealth services?

We are working on implementing Telehealth capabilities at all our Wisconsin Vision locations. Unfortunately, our Mt. Pleasant location does not yet offer Telehealth eye exams.
